Afro-Irish Links: A Shared Cultural History (2018-2020)

Filmed & edited by Robert Martin Kelly
Interviewer Frank Doherty
Research by Paul Crooks, Robert Martin Kelly and S.W.I.P.E.
Produced by S.W.I.P.E.
Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund

I filmed and edited two documentaries: In the first we interviewed eminent scholars and historians to look at how the two cultures came to be in the Caribbean and a look at music forms in the seventeenth century. The second documentary was comprised of interviews with people from the Afro-Caribbean and Irish communities in Slough.

I undertook extensive research for this project to look at the history of Irish and African migration to the Caribbean from the seventeenth century; African and Irish influences on Caribbean music and culture; the shared experience of Afro-Caribbean and Irish people who migrated to the UK in the twentieth century.

To accompany the films, a book was published. I compilied and edited the research material, transcribed all the interviews and typeset the content into a 136 page book. The book is available from Lulu.

I was also responsible for DVD authoring, creating the website and managing the social media content.

Our Journey So Far (2016)

Filmed & edited by Robert Martin Kelly
Interviewer Louise Chandler (Soundbite Media)
Produced by BAFA Reading (Barbados And Friends Association)
Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund

I produced a 60 minute documentary as part of a Heritage Project to commemorate the 50 years since Barbados acheived independence. In October 2016 the film premiered at Reading Town Hall as part of a Cultural Extravaganza event. I also provided short audio clips from the interviews for the exhibition at Reading Museum so that people could learn about Bajan history and the artefacts on display. The documentary is a revealing and rich history of valuable stories that contribute towards the cultural heritage of the Barbadian community, contributors shared previously untold stories about life on the island, why Reading was chosen as home and what the town looked like from the 1950s onwards.
